Nature Protectors: Green Advocates
The Green Advocates badge empowers students to become nature ambassadors by raising awareness about local environmental challenges. Using video as a storytelling tool, students explore real issues affecting biodiversity in Malta and use creativity, technology, and their voice to inform and inspire others. This badge encourages collaboration, digital literacy, and civic action, while connecting learning to real-world advocacy.
Badge goals
- Understand current environmental threats in Malta (e.g. habitat loss, illegal hunting & trapping, unsustainable development etc).
- Develop communication and media skills through video production/ social media visual posts.
- Encourage active citizenship for nature protection.
- Reach and inspire others, including decision-makers, to care about environmental issues.
When & Where to use this badge
Ideal for Media literacy, Environmental Studies, PSCD or cross-curricular projects. This badge can also be implemented during break clubs or special campaigns like Earth Day.
Steps to complete this badge
1. Learn:
Explore environmental threats affecting Malta’s nature and communities, such as:
ü Loss of biodiversity
ü Illegal hunting or trapping
ü Marine pollution, overfishing, bycatch
ü Unsustainable construction
Suggested activity:
- Research a selected threat using trusted sources.
- Discuss real cases and their impact on wildlife and ecosystems.
- Analyse existing advocacy videos or social campaigns for tone, visuals, and message. Eg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qYcKy8HBbo
2. Action:
Take photos/videos of nature in the community/school grounds/field visits to show the beauty of Maltese wildlife. Plan, script, and create a short video (max 2 minutes) that highlights a local environmental issue. Videos can include interviews, animations, or school/community footage. Encourage students to be creative, informative, fun and authentic in their message.
Suggested activity:
- Work in pairs or small groups (max 3).
- Use mobile phones and free editing apps (e.g. CapCut).
- Film around the school, community, or local nature sites.
- End the video with your message or a call to action.
3. Awareness:
Share the final video with the school community and online platforms. Tag @BirdLifeMalta and @DinjaWahda. Students are encouraged to reach out to decision-makers, use the video in school events, or submit to local campaigns.
Suggested activities:
- Present videos during assemblies or environmental days.
- Post on school social media.
- Email or tag policy-makers, local councils, or media.
- Launch a discussion or feedback session after the video screening.
