Children learn that conservation projects cost money and take action to raise funds for Foresta 2000.
Recommended Period for this Activity: All year round

1. Understanding why forests need funds 

Start by showing the "Growing a Forest" presentation (Downloadable Material) so that the children understand the effort it takes to grow a forest and why fundraising is essential for such a project. 

 

2. Fun ways to fundraise 
Brainstorm with your class ways to raise money for BirdLife Malta and Foresta 2000. Each class can choose one fundraising idea to carry out. Here are some fun suggestions: 

  • Bake Sale – Prepare and sell cakes or treats for classmates and staff. 
  • Fashion Show – Children create outfits from old clothes and showcase them in front of parents. 
  • Dress-Down Friday – For a €1 donation, students can come to school in casual clothes for the day. 
  • Wacky Hair Friday – For 50c, children can come in with funny or creative hairstyles. 
  • Quiz Night – Organise a quiz for families to join, charging €1 per team. 

 

3. Celebrating your contribution 
When the activity is complete, send your class donation (cheque payable to BirdLife Malta) together with a short note. In appreciation, BirdLife Malta will send you a Funding a Forest certificate, which will later be presented to your Dinja Waħda coordinator at the annual Dinja Waħda Awards ceremony.

I can use receipts, simple menus, and entrance tickets to work out totals and change. I recognise that prices marked at € 0.99 are a marketing strategy to make prices more attractive. 

Integration with Curriculum

Instructions for teachers:

1. Follow instructions on the website.

2. Brainstorm ideas in class. The fund raiser can be anything. Liaise with the Dinja Waħda coordinator for support. 

3. Other Fund raising ideas may also include, selling of second hand clothes or selling small plants that were planted by the students themselves in class. 

4. It is important to explain what is expected of students on the day of the fund raiser to avoid students getting overexcited and missing the chance to learn from this exprience. Practise handling money in class prior to this activity. 

5. Count the money collected in class with the students. 

6. Present the money to the Dinja Waħda coordinator alongside the students, to make them feel proud of their achievements :)
