A Shore Thing 2

Children commit to act within their family to protect shore habitats.
Recommended Period for this Activity: All year round

1. Research Beach Clean-up Initiatives
Guide the children in conducting an internet search about beach clean-up projects. Create a list of organisations and initiatives, including both government-led clean-ups and those organised by communities or volunteers.

2. Discuss and Reflect
Review the findings together and talk about what these efforts reveal about people in Malta. Show the "Shore Action photo" (Downloadable Materials) and start a discussion on how nature depends on real, practical actions like clean-upsnot just words.

3. Create a Promise Concertina
Introduce the "Promise Concertina" (Downloadable Materials) as a model or encourage the class to design their own version.

4. Empower the Children
Hold a brainstorming session on how each child can make a difference in their own family and community. Include both big and small actions, such as:

  • Joining beach clean-ups.
  • Using a small net to collect floating plastic while swimming.
  • Making sure the family brings containers or bags for rubbish during outings such as barbecues and picnics.
  • Reminding family members not to litter and to dispose of waste correctly.

Generate excitement around the idea of becoming guardians of the shore.

5. Make the Promise
Each child creates their own Promise Concertina:

  • Use a photo of a beach they know or love.
  • Choose and colour shore life drawings in the "Promise Concertina" file (Downloadable Materials).
  • Write a personal declaration to their favourite beach, promising to protect and defend it.

Important! Before the summer holidays, remind them of their promise and the importance of keeping it!

Possible extension:

1. Liaise with Dinja Waħda school coordinator to coordinate a beach clean up with the classes covering this topic.

2. NGO's such as Save the Blue can help provide the equipment and help to get rid of the litter collected. Volunteers can help and allow students to ask them questions about the litter they find and the dangers that this poses.

Attention: Please note that in order to carry out a beach cleanup you will need a special permit. More details can be found here.
