Nature's Voice 2

Children hear more about nature’s voices and bond with them through the story of a robin.
Recommended Period for this Activity: Term 2

1. Talking with a robin
If you have a robin in your school grounds, take the children outside to listen carefully to its song. Encourage them to ‘talk’ back by softly imitating its sounds. Bring cushions and sit in a circle outdoors to set the scene for a cosy storytelling moment.

2. Storytime with ruby
Read "Ruby Finds a New Home / Ruby ssib dar ġdida" (Downloadable Materials). As the story unfolds, let the children give different characters their own voices. If a sound is unfamiliar, encourage them to invent itthe third activity will introduce some of these bird calls in more detail.

3. Helping or harming nature?
After the story, discuss what happened to Ruby. Highlight how humans can both help and harm nature. Ask:

“Would Ruby feel welcome in our school?”

Remind the children that, thanks to the minibeast homes they built, they are now official Nature Helpers.

4. Creative robin crafts
Finish with a fun craft activity. Using the "Robin mobile" template from the Downloadable Materials, children can prepare and assemble robin mobiles to hang in class. Alternatively, create a story map together using a mix of materials to represent different parts of Ruby’s journey. The story map can then be used to boost memory, sequencing, and speaking skills.
