Animals and Me 1
1. Set the Scene for Storytelling
Set up a few tables with different craft materials. Dress up a twig as a child using cloth and googly eyes. Introduce this character as a new pupil named Beano (or let the children choose a name). Invite the class to imagine Beano’s background.
Then, tell the story "Beano’s Friends" (see Downloadable Materials), acting out emotions and movements with the children. Use the "Story cards" (Downloadable Materials) as puppets, stick them onto card and hold them up with kebab sticks.
2. Explore the School Grounds
Take the children on an animal-spotting walk around the school. When you find an animal, ask “I wonder why…” questions about what it’s doing or how it looks. Help the children get curious and connect with the animal:
“What would Beano say? What would the animal reply?”
Important! If children ask to pick animals up, remind them that wild animals can be easily scared or hurt. Compare this with pets like cats or dogs that enjoy human contact.
3. Create Animal Friends
Back in class, invite the children to make their own animal characters using craft materials. They can include themselves in their artwork, too. Talk about the animals you saw outside as inspiration.
4. Make a Class Display
Create a display titled Me and My Animal Friends! using the children’s creations. Add individual or group photos of the children next to their animals to show the connection.
