Children begin to recognize the special role plants play in the world around them and start forming a connection with them.
Recommended Period for this Activity: Term 1

1. Set Up Exploration Stations 
Turn your classroom into a discovery zone with different stations (tables or tuff trays). Each one should focus on a theme: 

  • Books 
  • Colourful objects (e.g. Duplo, crayons, paper) 
  • Toys or musical instruments 
  • Natural materials (e.g. pebbles, sticks, sand, water, seeds, seed pods) 

Do not bring plants yet. 

Important! Do not use live animals. 

 

2. Story Time: ‘Poppy’s World’ 
Find "Poppy’s World" in the Downloadable Materials and build a story together. Poppy explores each station, discovering the wonders of the materials. Act it out using touch, movement, and creativity. Talk about how each material feels and sounds. 

End the story with Poppy finding a flowering plant outdoors. If there isn’t one, bring a potted plant and place it outside where your class will find it. 

 

3. Grow a Green Corner 
Ask the children if they would like to have a plant in the classroom; you can find some inspiration in the "Plants for class" document (Downloadable Materials). With the support of their parents, invite them to bring in a potted plant. Set up a “green station” where natural materials are displayed alongside real plants.

Include plant care in your daily routine by greeting the plants each morning, watering them, and observing how they grow over time. 

 

4. Share Your Journey 
Use the Dinja Waħda Notice Board to share your classroom’s green adventure with the whole school—photos, drawings, or quotes welcome! 


Resources & Equipment Needed

  • 4 tables/tuff trays:
    • Station 1: Books 
    • Station 2: Colourful objects, e.g. Duplo, crayons, colourful paper/card 
    • Station 3: Toys or musical instruments  
    • Station 4: Natural objects, e.g. stones, pebbles, sticks of different lengths, sand, container of water, seeds, seed pods 
  • 1 potted flowering plant (if no outdoor option)
