Learning about the Blenny
1. Introduction
Show the video "Il-Budakkra/The Blenny" present in the Downloadable Materials section and ask guiding questions:
“Where do you think Blennies live?”, “What do you notice about their shape and colour?”
Explain that Blennies live in rocky coastlines and rockpools and are experts at hiding in crevices.
2. Indirect Observation
Encourage children to observe:
- Colour patterns;
- Fins and body movement;
- Behaviour in the rockpool (hiding, swimming, feeding).
3. Observation & Recording
The children should now sketch a Blenny in its habitat or note behaviours they noticed in the video. Start a discussion about adaptations: how the fish hides from predators and survives in shallow, rocky pools.
4. Creative Follow-Up
Children can colour the "Blenny Postcard" in the Downloadable Materials using paint, crayons, or natural materials.
