Diary of...
1. Explore your nature space
Take children outdoors to look closely at plants, insects, birds, snails, leaves, bark and soil. Ask them questions like:
What can you see? Who lives here? What are they doing
Let the children choose one real plant or animal they found and let them bond with it.
2. Become your creature
Now invite the children to pretend they ARE that plant or animal and together, think about:
Where do I live?
What do I do during the day?
What do I need to stay safe?
What do I hear, smell or feel?
Encourage simple imaginative ideas: “I am a tiny ant… I’m climbing a stick!”
3. Record their “diary”
One by one, record each child speaking in first person (e.g., “I woke up in the grass…”, “I stretched my leaves to the sun…”). Try to keep recordings short (about 5–15 seconds). Children may act out the movements as they speak.
Tips
- Help children start with prompts: “I am…”, “I live…”, “I like to…”, “I hide when…”.
- Let children revisit their chosen plant or animal before recording.
- Keep it playful—voices, gestures, and sound effects are welcome!
- Add a photo of what each child chose (plant, insect, leaf, stone home, etc.).
4. Share your work
Create a simple class slideshow using the recordings and photos of the plants/animals and share it on your school’s social media pages, tagging BirdLife Malta.
Also play the “diaries” during circle time so children can celebrate each other’s ideas.
