Nature Speaker: Exploring Language Through the Wild
The Nature Speaker badge explores students’ creativity through nature and different media. Using inspiring examples, and their own observations, students will gather words and ideas to write their own piece inspired by nature and express their connection to the environment with the help of creative language.
Badge goals
By the end of this activity, students will:
- Explore how language expresses nature
- Develop creative writing skills
- Use descriptive vocabulary and imagery
- Build a personal connection with the natural world
When & Where to use this badge
This activity can be linked with Languages (creative writing, poetry), Literature, PSCD (reflection and expression), Art (visual + written displays), but can be adapted by teachers across disciplines who wish to explore creative approaches to nature-based learning.
Teachers can adapt writing style, language, and level of support depending on their students, while keeping the core flow: Learn → Explore → Record → Create → Share
Steps to complete this badge
Step 1 – Learn & Think (10–15 minutes)
Share examples of how nature is described in poetry, songs, stories, or proverbs (Maltese or other languages). Highlight descriptive language, imagery, and emotions connected to nature.
Ask:
- How do writers describe nature?
- What feelings or images do these words create?
- Why is nature often used in stories and poems?
Step 2 – Explore (10–15 minutes)
Print the Word Bank worksheet from the Downloadable Material section and take students outside or ask them to observe their surroundings. Tell them to try notice details in nature (sounds, colours, textures, movement) and to write down words or phrases that describe what they see and feel. Afterwards, they should record their ideas and vocabulary in the worksheet (Downloadable Material) and create a word bank.
Step 3 – Create (20–25 minutes)
Students write one piece inspired by nature:
- Poem
- Short story
- Descriptive paragraph
Encourage the use of:
- Imagery (strong descriptions)
- Feelings and personal connection
- Creative language
Step 4 – Share (Optional / Extension)
Students can read their work aloud, display writing in class or school, and/or create a “Voices of Nature” collection (digital or physical).
