Sound Mapper: Sounds & Conservation
The Sound Mapper badge invites students to listen more closely to their surroundings. This will help them explore the balance between natural and human-made noises, discovering how sound shapes their environment and reflecting on what action they can plan and implement to create a better soundscape for themselves and their community.
Badge goals
By the end of this activity, students will:
- Recognise natural and human-made sounds
- Understand the impact of noise pollution
- Propose simple actions to protect natural soundscapes
When & Where to use this badge
This activity can be linked with Science (ecosystems, pollution), Geography (environmental awareness), Art (poster design), Languages (discussion, writing tasks), but can be adapted by teachers across disciplines who wish to explore creative approaches to nature-based learning.
Teachers can adapt timing, locations, and activities depending on their school context, while keeping the core flow: Listen → Explore → Analyse → Act → Share
Steps to complete this badge
Step 1 – Listen & Think (10 minutes)
Ask students to sit quietly and close their eyes. Play the provided Audio Recording from the Downloadable Material section and ask students to write down the sounds they hear.
Ask:
- Which sounds are natural?
- Which are human made?
- Which sounds felt calming? Why?
- Which sounds felt disturbing? Why?
Step 2 – Explore Your School (15–20 minutes)
Print the Sounds Around My School worksheet from the Downloadable Material section and take students outside to 2–3 different areas (e.g. garden, playground, near road). At each location, students will sit quietly for 2 minutes, carefully listening to any sound or noise and then they will record what they heard in their worksheet.
Step 3 – Discuss (10–15 minutes)
Class Discussion:
- What did you notice about your school’s sound environment?
- Are natural sounds easy or difficult to hear?
- How do human sounds affect the environment?
Step 4 – Act (10–15 minutes)
Choose ONE activity to do with your class:
- Design a Quiet Zone: Create a poster or idea for a quiet area in school
- Write a Proposal: Suggest ways your school can reduce noise pollution
- Create a Nature Soundtrack: Record or list calming natural sounds from your school
Step 5 – Share (Optional / Extension)
Students can present their ideas to the class, display posters in school and/or share their work during assembly or on school platforms.
