Nature Advocates: Protecting Nature By Inspiring Change
The Nature Advocates badge empowers students to become nature ambassadors by raising awareness about local environmental challenges. Using video as a storytelling tool, students explore real issues affecting biodiversity in Malta and use creativity, technology, and their voice to inform and inspire others. This badge encourages collaboration, digital literacy, and civic action, while connecting learning to real-world advocacy.

When & Where to use this badge
This activity can linked with Media Literacy (video creation), Environmental Studies, PSCD (active citizenship), Languages (communication and persuasion), but can be adapted by teachers across disciplines who wish to explore creative approaches to nature-based learning.
Teachers can adapt timing, tools, and level of complexity depending on their school context, while keeping the core flow: Learn → Plan → Create → Reflect → Share
Steps to complete this badge
1 Step 1 – Learn & Think (10–15 minutes)
Introduce environmental issues affecting Malta (e.g. pollution, habitat loss, overdevelopment). You can show or describe examples of awareness videos or campaigns. Discuss how media can influence people’s actions.
Ask:
- What environmental problems affect our country?
- Why should people care?
- How can we convince others to take action?
Step 2 – Plan Your Message (10–15 minutes)
Students work in pairs or small groups. They choose ONE issue and plan a short video.
Students decide:
- What message do we want to share?
- What scenes or images will we include?
- What is our call to action?
Step 3 – Create (20–30 minutes)
Students film their video (max 2 minutes). They can include:
- Footage of nature or local environment
- Short explanations or voiceovers
- Simple interviews or messages
- Optional: edit using a basic app
Step 4 – Reflect & Improve (10 minutes)
Students review their video and discuss:
- Is the message clear?
- Is it engaging?
- Does it inspire action?
Step 5 – Share (Optional / Extension)
Students can present videos to the class, share it during assembly or school events, post it on school platforms, and use them to raise awareness in the community.
